Description:

Spanish Sailors Artillery 16-17 century

Unpainted and unassembled plastic soldiers in 1/72 scale depicting “Spanish” sailors artillery during XVI century. Although costumes can be used also for the XVII, the gun themselves looks more feasible during XVI and already old fashioned for the last quarter of the century.

Box contains 28 figures in 7 poses and 4 guns.

Back box.

The box consists of four equal sprues, each one with seven figures and one gun, the gun, is split in 4 parts, two wheels, barrel and carriage.

The sprue is well casted, there is no flash and mould lines are small. Everything on the set is accurate though the gun is small for big vessels it’s accurate and well done though of course simplified.

Close up detail pictures:

Thought sculpture and detail is very good, ad accurate, some of the poses are rather flat, and overall the figures are in the smaller side of the scale, around 23 millimeters and really slim, we would have preferred at least one millimeter more and not so flat for an easier paint job.

Some proportions are bit weird, such too long arms or bit small heads, while other figures are superb, but in general they are good figures.

In 2017, Red Box released this box together with another 5 boxes all of them devoted to Spanish and Italian sailors, all labelled as both 16 and 17 centuries, but all of them clearly more into 16, and we could say that with the battle of Lepanto 1571 in mind, though the figures, especially from the Spanish sets, can be used as Conquistadores without problem.

These six sets also complimented another 3 sets released in 2015 devoted to the English sailors, plus the 3 sets devoted to the Turkish/Ottoman sailors for the same period released the same year, configuring all of them, an excellent coverage of the XVI century naval warfare in Europe and Mediterranean with projections over the Americas and some of the sets and figures still usable for the XVII century.
