Description:

F4U-4 Corsair

Unassembled plastic model kit in 1/72 scale of a U.S. WWII fighter aircraft Vought F4U Corsair, a carrier based fighter that initially was used land-based due problems on the landing but by the end of the war, the later improved variants made it the predominant carrier based fighter. Over 12000 units were produced, seeing service also during Korean War as attack/close support aircraft.

F4U-4 was the last variant to see service during WWII, delivered in the early 1945. They usually was fitted with 3 machine guns per wing, as the box arts depicts, but the kit offers two cannons per wing, which exactly belongs to the F4U-4B variant, armed with four 20mm guns. Around 300 units were produced of this type. The kit lacks of any other payload, rockets racks and pylons for bombs or external droppable fuel tanks was common on the type. For the late war, the fighter-attack role was the preferred configuration.

This is a classic Matchbox kit, tooled in the first year of the brand in 1972. During all its life, till 1992, kept always the same content including decal sheet, with two U.S. Marine Corps markings. It had two different box arts.

As all the whole original Matchbox range, the kit enjoy of a deeply engraved panel lines. Some hobbyists state also that is not a particular easy to fit kit despite of being a simple kit.

Early box art, from 1972 till 1982.
