Summary

Artillery

BM-30 Smerch

BM-30 Smerch (9K58 Smerch) is a Soviet era heavy multiple rocket launcher introduced in the very late 80s. It consists of 12 tubes and launches 300mm rockets.

The only known reference for this rockect launcher is the Model Collect kit ModelCollect – 72047 – BM-30 Smerch(9K58)multiple rocket launcher. Despite it may be out of production already, it’s available yet as per 2022, so hurry up.

OTR-21 Tochka

The OTR-21 Tochka (NATO reporting name SS-21 Scarab) is a Soviet tactical missile, introduced in mid 70s, remains operative after several upgrades. It can fire different warheads including nuclear ones.

At the moment of write this guide, only two resin models by Alex Miniatures and Wespe Models have been released for this model, but Hobby Boss is working in an injected plastic model kit, to be released during 2022.

9K52 Luna-M

A Soviet ballistic missile introduced in mid 60s, chemical and nuclear capable. All the Ukrainian 9K52 Luna-M are stated to be on storage and non operative status.

At the time to write this guide, only W-Model has released in resin one model for the 9K52 Luna-M.

BM-27 Uragan

The BM-27 is a is a self-propelled multiple rocket launcher of the late 70s, used over various truck platforms such ZIL-135 but also on new platforms. It launches 220mm rockets originally in a 16 tubes configuration. All the Ukrainian BM-27 are stated to be on storage and non operative status.

Again we can only find this model as resin kit, done by Armada Hobby.

BM-21 Grad

The BM-21 “Grad” is a Soviet multiple rocket launcher, usually mounted on trucks chassis, introduced in the early 60s and remaining in service. It consists of 40 launch tubes usually mounted in an Ural-375D truck chassis and fires 122mm rockets. Produced in almost 100.000 units, has been widely exported and has seen action in multiple conflicts since the 60s. Ukraine keep a good number of them, mostly of BM-21B variant as well as introduced its own modifications programs. Some of them switched URAL trucks by KrAZ-6322-121 trucks.

Two brands offers and option in 1/72 scale for the basic launcher over the URAL-375 chassis, ICM – 72714 – BM-21 “Grad” Multiple Launch Rocket System and HobbyBoss – 82931 – Russian BM-21 Grad Multiple Rocket Launcher.

2S19 Msta-S

The 2S19 Msta is a Soviet self propelled 152mm howitzer designed by Soviet Union an entered service in 1989, as replacement of the older 2S3 Akatsiya. Ukraine retained a small number of them, as well as some were captured during the conflict. Zvezda offers a version in 1/72 scale but our recommendation is for Hobby Boss – 82927 – 2S19-M1 Self-propelled Howitzer.

2S3 Akatsiya

The 2S3 Akatsiya was the main 152mm soviet self propelled howitzer during 70s and 80s, remain in service yet and produced in quite large quantities. Ukraine retained around 500 units after Soviet Union collapse, but many of them are just in storage condition. Any major manufacturer has done it in injected plastic and 1/72 scale but two brands did it as resin kit, W-Model and Balaton Modell.

2S1 Gvozdika

2S1 Gvozdika is a 122mm Soviet self propelled howitzer in service since 1972. Despite Ukraine retained a high number of them after Soviet Union collapse (over 500) most of them are not operative. It’s build over the MT-LBu chassis.

Only ACE produced this kit in injected plastic 1/72 scale. Sadly is out of production. Siga Model released same ACE kit under their brand. Armo produced a version in resin. The ACE kit, if available yet, can be found as ACE – 72121 – 2S1 “Gvozdika”.

2S9 Nona

The 2S9 Nona is a 120mm air droppable mortar build over the BTR-D airborne personnel carrier introduced in 1981. It’s available with the Ukrainian army in limited numbers.

Only ACE has produced this kit, in two variants, ACE – 72113 – Nona 2S9 and ACE – 72169 – NONA-SVK 120mm SP mortar 2S23 which is an improved version build over BTR-80 chassis and maybe doesn’t fit Ukrainian version.

Together with the above list, Ukraine keeps an important number of ex-Soviet towed artillery pieces, such 2A65 (152mm), 2A36 (152mm), D-20 (152mm), D-30 (122mm) covered by Military Wheels – 7222 – D-30 Field Gun, 2A45 Sprut-A (125mm AT gun) covered by Military Wheels – 7231 – 2A45M “Sprut-B” anti-tank gun, T-12 (100mm AT gun), D-48 (85mm AT gun) or D-44 (85mm AT gun), all of them with a poor coverage in 1/72 scale except for the couple of guns covered by Military Wheels.

In the last years, Ukraine started or re-started some self produced ballistic missiles systems such Hrim-2 (GRIM-2), Neptune (Anti-ship) or Sapsan, without coverage in the 1/72 scale and unconfirmed numbers of their real availability.
