The Boeing 737-700 is a member of the Next Generation (NG) family of 737 aircraft, introduced in the late 1990s as an evolution of Boeing’s best-selling narrow-body airliner series. Designed to offer better fuel efficiency, longer range, and updated avionics compared to earlier 737 variants, the -700 typically seats between 126 and 149 passengers, depending on configuration. It’s a versatile, reliable workhorse well-suited to short- and medium-haul routes, and it became especially popular among low-cost and regional carriers due to its performance and lower operating costs.

Southwest Airlines, one of the largest and most recognizable low-cost carriers in the United States, has been a key operator and major customer of the 737-700. In fact, Southwest was the launch customer for the type, receiving the first aircraft in 1997. The -700 formed the backbone of Southwest’s fleet for many years, perfectly aligning with the airline’s business model: frequent flights, fast turnarounds, and a single aircraft type to simplify maintenance and crew training. Southwest configured its 737-700s with an all-economy layout, offering open seating and quick boarding, helping support its reputation for on-time performance and cost efficiency.

Over time, Southwest began modernizing its fleet with newer 737 MAX aircraft, but the 737-700 still makes up a significant portion of its operations. The combination of Boeing’s design and Southwest’s operational philosophy helped cement both the aircraft and the airline as major forces in commercial aviation.
