The Rutan Model 76 Voyager is a revolutionary aircraft best known for accomplishing the first nonstop, unrefueled flight around the world. Designed by famed aerospace engineer Burt Rutan and piloted by Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager, the Voyager took off from Edwards Air Force Base on December 14, 1986, and completed its historic journey nine days later, on December 23, after flying 42,000 kilometers (over 26,000 miles). The aircraft’s distinctive design—featuring twin booms, a rear-mounted propeller, and an ultra-light composite structure—was purpose-built to achieve exceptional fuel efficiency and endurance.

Constructed mostly from lightweight materials such as carbon fiber, fiberglass, and Kevlar, the Voyager carried fuel in nearly every part of its structure, including its wings and fuselage, allowing it to take off at a weight more than three times its empty mass. Its record-setting flight was not only a triumph of engineering but also of human determination and endurance. Today, the Voyager is preserved and on display at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, serving as an enduring symbol of innovation in aviation history.
