The Holy Roman Empire grenadiers from 1701 to 1714 were elite shock troops within the imperial armies that fought during the War of the Spanish Succession. As part of the Habsburg monarchy’s military forces, they served across the many scattered territories of the Empire, fighting in major battles against France and its allies alongside the armies of Britain, the Dutch Republic, and other members of the Grand Alliance.

Grenadiers in this period were selected from among the tallest and strongest soldiers in the line infantry, chosen for their courage and reliability. Originally developed in the late 17th century to throw grenades—hence the name—their role had evolved by the early 18th century into that of elite assault infantry. They often led assaults, stormed fortifications, and held critical positions under heavy fire.

Austrian and imperial grenadiers were typically organized into grenadier companies attached to line infantry regiments, though in battle they were often combined into ad hoc composite grenadier battalions to form concentrated shock units. Their uniform followed the general style of the imperial army, featuring white or off-white coats, colored facings indicating regimental affiliation, and the iconic tall mitre cap—a pointed cloth or metal-fronted cap that distinguished them visually from regular line infantry who wore cocked hats. The mitre was both a status symbol and a practical choice, as it didn’t get knocked off easily during charges or while throwing grenades.

Grenadiers were armed with flintlock muskets and bayonets, and although grenade throwing remained part of their legacy, by this period it was largely symbolic—the grenade was falling out of practical battlefield use. What remained was their elite status, training, and discipline.

In battles like Blenheim (1704), Höchstädt, Oudenarde, and Malplaquet, imperial grenadiers played important roles in the thick of the fighting, often deployed at key points in the line or in offensive spearheads. Their reputation for bravery and determination under fire made them a valuable asset to the Habsburg war effort and a respected force among their allies and enemies alike.

Box contains 52 plastic soldiers in 1/72 scale depicting Austrian Grenadiers, suitable for the 1701-1714 period. Note that the Holy Roman Empire had other sources than Austrian to feed their armies, such Hungarian, Balkans or Germans.

Poses are a mix of common poses, with firing, standing or advancing poses, plus two poses really making honor to their role, throwing grenades. Sculpture is nice and in line with the releases of the War of the Spanish Succession series. The box include 16 different poses, four them unique and 12 repeated 4 times for the bulk of the troops.
