ESCI 9027, released in 1982, was the first tooling in the company’s 1/72 scale Phantom family and remains one of its most recognized kits. It provides parts to build either an F‑4E or F‑4F and includes decal options for four aircraft: a USAF F‑4E with sharkmouth nose art, an Israeli Air Force F‑4E, a West German F‑4F, and a Royal Australian Air Force F‑4E.

The mold features recessed panel lines (finely engraved), which were advanced for the time, and overall fit is considered decent, though minor filler is usually required at the intakes and wing roots. The cockpit is basic, with decal consoles and minimal detailing, but the twin-seat layout is accurate in shape. Builders often replace the seats or add belts to enhance the area.

Kit parts include correct fuselage details for the F‑4E and F‑4F, such as the TISEO fairing on the port wing root and unslatted stabilizers. The nose and tail sections match USAF and export variants reasonably well. The underwing loadout comprises four AIM‑9 Sidewinders, four AIM‑7 Sparrows, and two 370-gallon wing tanks, offering a classic air superiority fit. The central tank is not always included, depending on the boxing.

Despite its simplicity, ESCI 9027 remains a popular kit thanks to its clean panel lines, variant flexibility, and strong decal options. With minor updates to the cockpit and attention to seams, it builds into an attractive early/mid-service F‑4E or F‑4F representation.

ESCI – 9031 – Mc Air F‑4C/J Phantom II

The ESCI 9031 kit, released in 1983, builds upon the earlier F‑4E/F tooling and introduces parts and decals for both the F‑4C and F‑4J variants. It includes a twin-stick cockpit with decal-based instrument panels. While sufficient for the time, the interior lacks depth and benefits from aftermarket enhancements. The fuselage and wing parts show typical ESCI-era fit, with minor seam issues around the intakes and some visible sink marks near alignment pin areas.

This boxing provides the correct style of exhaust nozzles and stabilizers for either variant, though the detail is more accurate for USAF types. The sensor fit and nose gear doors favor the Air Force configuration, meaning the USMC F‑4J requires some corrections for accuracy. The model features engraved panel lines, a two-position canopy, and undercarriage that can be posed up or down. It also includes USAF– and USN-style pylons, four AIM‑9 Sidewinders, four AIM‑7 Sparrows, and drop tanks. However, Phantom experts caution against using wing tanks on Navy or Marine aircraft, as they were rarely fitted operationally due to catapult clearance issues.

ESCI – 9029 – RF‑4C/E Phantom II Reconnaissance

ESCI 9029, released in 1982, presents the reconnaissance variant of the Phantom II and is based on the same tooling as the earlier F‑4E/F kit with some modified parts. This boxing allows construction of either the RF‑4C or RF‑4E, depending on markings and minor airframe details. It retains the recessed panel lines and general parts of the ESCI Phantom series, offering a solid base for the reconnaissance version in 1/72 scale.

Unlike the fighter variants, the RF‑4 kit features a modified nose section without a radar, replaced by the characteristic elongated camera housing. While the shape captures the general profile of the recce Phantom, detail is minimal and lacks options for open camera ports or lenses. The rest of the kit, including wings, stabilizers, and fuselage, is largely shared with the 9027 tooling, including the same cockpit layout and weapons sprue—though these are largely irrelevant for the unarmed RF‑4 role. Include parts also for the ALQ 119 ECM pod.

The cockpit remains under-detailed and generic. Builders aiming for accuracy will want to modify the instrument panels or consider aftermarket parts to better reflect reconnaissance avionics layouts.

RF‑4E, Luftwaffe, in NATO wraparound camo or Norm 72 scheme

Fit and molding quality are consistent with the rest of ESCI’s Phantom line—respectable for its age, with manageable seams and engraved detail. While no longer up to modern standards, ESCI 9029 is one of the few vintage kits covering the RF‑4 variant, and with some updates, it still serves well as a foundation for Cold War reconnaissance builds.

ESCI – 9045 – RAF Phantom / F‑4S

This 1986 re‑boxing adapts the ESCI tooling to the US Navy/RAF F‑4S—a slatted, updated version of the F‑4J. The kit includes slatted stabilizers and full-length intake trunking characteristic of the S-model. Cockpit and fuselage remain identical to earlier ESCI molds, complete with recessed panel lines and the option for open canopy display. Reviewers note that, while impressive for its age, the cockpit is overly recessed and benefits from aftermarket upgrades. Decal options reflect late-service RAF and USN/USMC aircrafts.

ESCI – 9043 – “Toned Down” Phantom

Released in 1985, this “Toned Down” edition offers three distinctive camouflaged schemes across NATO air arms:

German Air Force F‑4F, JG 71 “Richthofen” (37+61)
Turkish Air Force F‑4F, 112 Filo “Şeytanlar” (I‑302)
USAF F‑4F, 334 TFS, 4 TFW (AF74‑655)

The “toned down” title refers to the subdued palate compared to the high-contrast U.S. markings. The kit shares the same detailed panel engraving and cockpit layout as the F‑4E/F series.

ESCI – 9033 – Bicentennial F4 Phantom II

Issued in 1984 to commemorate the U.S. Bicentennial (1976), this kit depicts an F‑4J Phantom flown by VX‑4. The kit retains molded-in IR sensor from earlier F‑4B/J tooling. It features navy-style exhausts, slatted tails, and has sharply engraved panel lines reviewers praised. The decal sheet offers a striking one-off paint scheme, though resin cockpit replacements are still recommended .

ESCI/ERTL – 9085  – F‑4 “National Guard” Bomber

In 1989 already under the ESCI/Ertl time, and close to the end, another F‑4 was released, the ESCI/ERTL – 9085  – F‑4 “National Guard” Bomber, just adding a new decal sheet with the following markings:

ESCI/ERTL – 9121  – RF‑4C Phantom “Desert Storm”

As in many other cases, whenever it was possible, ERTL updated the ESCI kits after the Gulf War, Operation Desert Storm (1991).

In most of the cases they were only decal updates but this time ERTL tooled a new jammer underwing POD for their RF‑4C release, replacing the original ALQ 119 ECM pod with a AN/ALQ‑131 ECM Pod , thought we are unable to certify it was mounted so in F-4Cs during the conflict, and the marking illustration the box cover is an aircraft on display at Dayton Wright-Patterson Air Force Base – KFFO, USA – Ohio, but wearing a AN/ALQ-184(V) ECM pod.

The new decal sheet added the following markings:

AMT Reissues:

AMT/Ertl did two reissues of the ESCI F-4s, in 1988 and 1990. They were just updates with new decals.

Summary

The ESCI 1/72 Phantom II kits represent solid mid‑1980s toolings with clean molding, engraved panel detail (not so common at the time), and some flexible modeling options.

While the cockpit may feel dated and decals can be delicate, they remain collectible and buildable with good results. With simple cockpit upgrades and seam work, they make attractive Proximity-Scale models of Cold War Phantoms across a range of air forces. In the good features noted in the base model, the intakes and exhaust where quite correct and nicely done. With around 85 parts per kit, the building process is affordable for most of modelers and when released, the Cartograf printed decals where a quality plus in these kits. Nowadays many years later, Hasegawa and in more recent times Fine Molds are the best options to build F-4s in 1/72 scale, both brands has lot of references covering the subject, but these old kits are still pleasant to build.

Italeri reused the ESCI molds when releasing Italeri – 1373 – F-4 C/D/J PHANTOM II ACES USAF-US Navy Vietnam ACES and Italeri – 1448 – F-4 E/F Phantom II.
