The Caproni Type B “torpedo boat” was an experimental ground effect vehicle (GEV) developed in Italy during the 1930s. Unlike traditional torpedo boats, it was designed to operate using the ground effect phenomenon, which occurs when an aircraft flies close to the surface, creating increased lift and reduced drag. This principle, later seen in Soviet ekranoplans, allowed the vehicle to achieve high speeds over water while maintaining stability.

The Caproni Type B was intended as a fast attack craft, capable of launching torpedoes at enemy ships while skimming just above the water’s surface. It featured a low-mounted wing configuration and was powered by aircraft engines, though details about its exact specifications remain scarce. The project was highly ambitious for its time, but like many early ground effect experiments, it faced technical and operational challenges. The concept never reached mass production, likely due to engineering difficulties, limited understanding of ground effect dynamics, and changing military priorities. Despite its failure, the Caproni Type B was an intriguing precursor to later ground-effect vehicles, highlighting early Italian innovation in high-speed naval warfare concepts.
