Description:

The Diamond T 969 was a 4-ton, 6×6 wrecker truck developed by the Diamond T Motor Car Company during World War II. Introduced in 1940, it was designed to recover and tow disabled vehicles from the battlefield, playing a crucial role in maintaining the mobility of Allied forces.

Powered by a Hercules RXC 529 cubic-inch inline six-cylinder gasoline engine, the Diamond T 969 produced approximately 106 horsepower. It featured a five-speed manual transmission coupled with a two-speed transfer case, enabling it to tow loads up to 25,000 pounds. The vehicle’s dimensions were substantial, measuring about 292 inches in length, 100 inches in width, and 116 inches in height, with a weight of approximately 21,350 pounds.

The wrecker was equipped with a Holmes W-45 heavy-duty military wrecker bed, featuring twin booms and two 5-ton winches mounted at the front of the bed, as well as a front-mounted Gar Wood winch. This setup allowed for versatile recovery operations, including lifting and towing. Stabilizer legs on each side provided additional support during lifting tasks.

Initially, the Diamond T 969 was produced with a closed steel cab. However, starting in 1943, an open cab version was introduced, which could be fitted with a machine gun ring mount for defensive purposes.

The Diamond T 969 and its variants, such as the 969A and 969B, were widely used by the U.S. Army and Allied forces during World War II and continued in service through the Korean War. Their robust design and reliable performance made them a valuable asset in military logistics and vehicle recovery operations.
