The T-72B3M is a modernized version of the Soviet-era T-72 main battle tank, developed by Russia to extend the operational relevance of its large fleet of older armored vehicles. Introduced in the mid-2010s, the B3M represents a deep upgrade over previous T-72 variants, with significant enhancements in firepower, mobility, protection, and electronics. It was first seen publicly in 2014 and has since been integrated into the Russian military in considerable numbers.

Visually similar to earlier models, the T-72B3M incorporates a new 125 mm 2A46M-5 smoothbore gun capable of firing both conventional rounds and guided missiles. Its fire control system includes the Sosna-U thermal imaging sight, which provides the commander with independent target acquisition capabilities, allowing for hunter-killer operations. The mobility of the tank is notably improved with the installation of a 1,130 horsepower V-92S2F diesel engine, resulting in better speed, acceleration, and performance across rough terrain.

Protection has also been significantly upgraded. The turret and hull are reinforced with Relikt explosive reactive armor, a more advanced system than the previous Kontakt-5, and additional modular armor and slat protection can be fitted to shield against anti-tank weapons. Inside the tank, the electronics have been modernized to include a digital dashboard for the driver and improved communication systems, enhancing battlefield coordination and situational awareness.

The T-72B3M has been widely deployed within Russian armored units and has seen combat use in recent conflicts, including operations in Ukraine. While it offers much-improved capabilities over its predecessors, its performance in high-threat environments has highlighted both its strengths and the limitations inherent in upgrading a legacy design. Nonetheless, the T-72B3M remains a practical solution for maintaining a capable armored force without the expense of fielding entirely new tanks like the T-14 Armata.
