The M109 series mounts a 155 mm cannon on a fully tracked, armored chassis, offering mobility, firepower, and protection for artillery crews. The A2 variant, introduced in the late 1970s, featured several important improvements over earlier models: it had a longer M185 cannon for increased range (up to around 23 kilometers with standard shells and about 30 kilometers with rocket-assisted projectiles), enhanced ammunition storage, and reliability upgrades to its engine and suspension systems. The turret and hull also received refinements for better protection and crew efficiency.

Crewed typically by six soldiers, the M109A2 could fire a variety of munitions, including high explosive, smoke, illumination, and even specialized rounds like GPS-guided munitions (in later adapted versions). It was widely exported and served with many NATO and allied forces.

The M109 family has seen continuous updates, and although the A2 version has largely been retired or replaced in front-line service by more modern types like the M109A6 Paladin, many are still active around the world today, especially in reserve and training units.
