Description:

The M19 Tank Transporter was a heavy-duty vehicle system used by the U.S. and Allied forces during World War II and into the 1950s. It comprised the M20 Diamond T Model 980 or 981 12-ton 6×4 tractor and the M9 12-wheel trailer, designed to transport tanks and heavy equipment.

The M20 tractor was powered by a Hercules DFXE diesel engine producing 185 horsepower, coupled with a 4-speed main gearbox and a 3-speed auxiliary transmission. This setup allowed the transporter to haul loads up to 45 tons, reaching speeds of up to 23 mph (37 km/h) with an operational range of approximately 300 miles (480 km).

The M9 trailer, developed by the Rogers Brothers Corporation, featured a low-bed design with a 12-wheel configuration, enabling it to carry various armored vehicles, including the M4 Sherman and Churchill tanks. The trailer’s suspension system included trailing beams at the front and center pivot beams at the rear, providing stability during transport.

Over 5,000 M19 units were produced and deployed across multiple theaters of war. While the U.S. military began replacing the M19 with the M25 Tank Transporter during the war, the M19 continued to serve in various roles, including equipment recovery and ammunition transport. The British Army also utilized the M19 until it was gradually replaced by the Thornycroft Antar in the early 1950s.

An original Matchbox kit tooled in 1979. Kit consists of 140 parts and while the kit’s detail level reflects the standards of its time, the model serves as both a nostalgic piece for collectors and an accessible project for those new to the hobby. Kit include consists of the M20 Diamond T 980/981 tractor and the M9 Rogers 45-ton trailer, a small display base, include two seat figures and a road sign.
