The Sturmpanzer IV, nicknamed “Brummbär” (“grumbler” or “grouch” by Allied forces, though not an official German designation), was a German self-propelled assault gun developed during World War II. Built on the chassis of the Panzer IV, it was armed with a powerful 150 mm StuH 43 L/12 howitzer designed for infantry support in urban and fortified environments. Its role was to neutralize enemy strongpoints such as bunkers, buildings, and barricades that standard tanks struggled to engage effectively. The Brummbär’s thick armor and massive firepower made it a formidable presence, particularly in street fighting.

First introduced in 1943, the Sturmpanzer IV saw action in key battles such as the Battle of Kursk, Anzio, and the Warsaw Uprising. Around 300 units were produced in total, evolving through several versions that improved visibility, crew conditions, and mechanical reliability. Though often misunderstood due to its squat appearance and specialized role, the Brummbär filled a crucial niche in the German arsenal, combining the mobility of a tank chassis with the punch of heavy artillery. Its distinctive profile and combat role make it a popular subject among military historians and scale modelers alike.

UM (Unimodels) already has produced two different variants of the Brummbär. Sadly the brand naming doesn’t match exactly production series of the Brummbär, which spams through four different variants. In this case the brand notes clearly it’s a Brummbär build over a Panzer IV Ausf. H chassis but this chassis was used in both Second and Third production series, with little difference between them. Compared to the initial production series (UM (UniModel) – 556 – Sturmpanzer IV “Brummbär” / 1943) the gunner hatch has been removed and the Fahrersehklappe 80 (drivers vision port) was replaced in the Third series by periscopes, and this helps to identify the production series this model depicts, as it clearly shows the periscope way instead of the earlier Fahrersehklappe 80. Another difference between the early and the late series was gun itself, replaced by the lighter (in weight) StuH 43/1, but externally is difficult to differentiate them in a 1/72 scale model.
