The GAZ-AAA was a Soviet 6×4 military truck developed in the 1930s, based on the earlier GAZ-AA (a licensed copy of the Ford Model AA). It featured a reinforced chassis and a third axle, which improved its load capacity and stability—making it suitable for a variety of military roles, from cargo transport to specialized weapon platforms. Widely used during the Second World War, the GAZ-AAA was appreciated for its simplicity, ruggedness, and ease of maintenance in harsh field conditions.

One of the notable variants was the GAZ-AAA fitted with the 25mm 72-K anti-aircraft gun, a configuration developed to provide mobile air defense for Soviet troops and convoys. The 72-K was a semi-automatic, rapid-firing autocannon capable of engaging low-flying aircraft and, at times, lightly armored ground targets. Mounted on the bed of the GAZ-AAA, this combo allowed for a degree of mobility in anti-aircraft defense and could be quickly repositioned as battlefield conditions changed. Though vulnerable to air and ground attack due to limited armor, it was a valuable and versatile asset on the Eastern Front. For modelers, this pairing presents a visually dynamic and historically significant subject, combining an iconic Soviet workhorse with a distinctive piece of wartime firepower.

UM (Unimodel) tooled their GAZ-AAA kit firstly in 2003 (UM – 317 – Gaz AAA Truck), and has been used since then produce other specific variants such airfield starter or refueller, as well as issued under brands like Zebrano. Kit include rubber wheels and transparent film for the car glass. The rear cargo area has been modified and new parts added to house the 72-K anti-air gun. The gun itself, not confirmed but it could be PST or Zebrano models. We’ll update information as soon as possible.
