ESCI – 225 – Barbarian Warriors (Romanic Wars)

This box contains 46 figures in 13 poses.

Under the generic and ambiguos name of Barbarian, ESCI hide her a well bunch of Germanic warriors ready to face to Roman Empire for centuries.

Spears and shields are separated parts (this reduces the usual ESCI 50-15 numbers, with 4 figures less and 2 poses less than standard sets), for the spears, instead of tool ring-hands as other times ESCI did, this time hands are perfectly sculpted in shape to hold the weapons, they fit pretty well, but is fitting is less secure than those ring-hands, though beautifully sculpted and a good attempt of engineering. For the shields ESCI repeated here the formula seen in other sets, the shield has two clips that fit around the arm, it ends fine, but leaves a gap in the shield that needs to be filled if you pretend to paint these figures and use them in a proper manner. The inclusion of a woman warrior pose is also a nice touch by ESCI.

Quality of sculpture and cast, is top class as many other ESCI sets, setting an standard quality for decades. About the poses, there is mix a good and dynamic poses with some others not so brilliant, but all is correct in our opinion.

Same set was later reissued under Italeri as Italeri – 6048 – Barbarian Warriors and ESCI also issued this set, together with the Roman counter part, in a battle set named “Adrian’s Wall” were most of these figures should not have place, though some of them, can easily pass as Britons as well.
