The Messerschmitt Bf 109B “Berta” was the first major production version of the Bf 109 series and a significant step forward compared to the earlier Bf 109A “Anton.” Introduced in 1937, the Bf 109B featured a more powerful Junkers Jumo 210Da engine, offering about 680 horsepower, and improvements to aerodynamics and armament. Early Bf 109Bs were armed with two 7.92 mm MG 17 machine guns, although some later production versions added a third gun firing through the propeller hub. These refinements gave the “Berta” better reliability, slightly higher speed, and improved combat capabilities.

In essence, the Bf 109B “Berta” solidified the reputation of the Bf 109 family as a fast, maneuverable, and deadly fighter, laying the groundwork for its dominance in the early years of World War II.
