The Beechcraft SD-17S Staggerwing was a variant of the iconic Beech Model 17 Staggerwing, a luxury biplane introduced in the 1930s. Recognized for its unique negative staggered wing configuration—where the upper wing was set behind the lower wing—it provided excellent aerodynamics and stability, making it one of the fastest and most advanced civilian aircraft of its time. Originally designed as an executive transport, the Staggerwing was also adopted for military service in various roles, including reconnaissance and liaison duties during World War II.

One of the most distinctive modifications of the Staggerwing was the floatplane version, which replaced the traditional landing gear with large pontoons, allowing it to operate from water. These amphibious variants, including the SD-17S, were used in regions with vast waterways, such as Alaska and remote parts of Canada, where runways were scarce. The addition of floats slightly reduced speed and maneuverability but greatly increased operational flexibility, making the aircraft a popular choice for bush flying, survey missions, and maritime patrol. Despite its transition to an era dominated by metal monoplanes, the Staggerwing remains a celebrated classic, with float-equipped versions still prized by collectors and vintage aviation enthusiasts.
