Description:

The MiG-21F-13/S-106 produced at the Vodochody plant in Czechoslovakia was a licensed-built version of the Soviet MiG-21F-13, manufactured during the early 1960s as part of Warsaw Pact cooperation. Vodochody—Czechoslovakia’s premier aircraft manufacturer—was authorized to produce the MiG-21F-13 under the designation S-106, with production beginning around 1963. Approximately 194 aircraft were built there between 1963 and 1965.

Although the S-106 was externally and functionally nearly identical to the Soviet-made MiG-21F-13, there were minor differences in materials, manufacturing standards, and components, as Czechoslovakia used some local parts and instruments. The aircraft was still powered by the same Tumansky R-11F-300 engine, and retained the K-13 missile capability and NR-30 cannon.

The S-106s built at Vodochody equipped both the Czechoslovak Air Force and were also exported to other countries, including some in the Middle East and Africa. For Czechoslovakia, this marked a key point in its aviation industry, as it became one of the few countries allowed to license-produce a front-line Soviet jet fighter during the Cold War. The aircraft served mainly in interceptor roles and remained in use with the Czechoslovak military into the 1970s before being phased out in favor of more advanced MiG-21 variants.
