The Antonov An-124 “Ruslan” is one of the largest and most powerful cargo aircraft ever built, developed in the Soviet Union during the 1980s by the Antonov Design Bureau. Designed to transport oversized and heavy military equipment, vehicles, and industrial cargo over long distances, it became a strategic airlift cornerstone for both the Soviet and later Russian air forces, as well as a major asset in civilian heavy-lift aviation.

The An-124 features a high-wing design, four Ivchenko Progress D-18T turbofan engines, and a massive cargo hold with front and rear loading ramps. Its nose section can be raised, allowing “roll-on/roll-off” loading of large vehicles and machinery. It can carry payloads exceeding 150 tons, including tanks, helicopters, construction equipment, or space components. The aircraft also has an internal crane system and onboard winches, giving it significant autonomy during cargo operations.

The Ruslan was intended in part to rival and surpass the American Lockheed C-5 Galaxy, offering superior payload and cargo volume. While it served Soviet military needs—especially in the transport of mobile missile systems and other large strategic assets—it has also been widely used in civilian roles by Antonov Airlines and other operators. It has flown humanitarian aid, industrial cargo, satellites, and even other aircraft components across the globe.

Though fewer than 60 were built, the An-124’s reputation for ruggedness, long-range capability, and sheer lifting power has made it a legendary aircraft in aviation history. Despite aging airframes and increasing maintenance demands, the Ruslan continues to operate today, serving as an unmatched heavy-lift solution in both military and commercial missions.

The Ukrainian An-124 fleet, operated primarily by Antonov Airlines, represents the largest and most active group of An-124s in the world today. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, several An-124s remained under Ukrainian control, becoming the backbone of Ukraine’s strategic airlift capability and a unique asset in the global cargo industry. Antonov Airlines, based in Kyiv, was the first company to commercialize the An-124 for international heavy cargo transport, using it to move massive and outsized loads that no other aircraft could handle.

Ukrainian An-124s have supported a wide range of missions: from delivering humanitarian aid and disaster relief supplies, to transporting large infrastructure components, locomotives, and even other aircraft parts. Their ability to carry up to 150 tons of cargo, land on rough or unprepared runways, and operate with minimal ground support has made them invaluable to governments, NGOs, and industries worldwide.

One of the most notable aircraft in this fleet was UR-82029, a highly active commercial An-124 that participated in hundreds of missions globally. Ukrainian crews became known not only for their technical expertise but also for their role in humanitarian operations, such as delivering medical supplies during the COVID-19 pandemic.
