Description:

The Ki-106, developed by Tachikawa near the end of World War II, was an experimental adaptation of the well-regarded Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate, redesigned to use wood rather than aluminum for much of its airframe. Japan’s rapidly declining access to essential war materials prompted efforts like the Ki-106, which aimed to keep fighter production going despite a collapsing industrial base.

Although externally similar to the Ki-84, the Ki-106’s wooden construction added weight and compromised its performance. Only a few units were ever completed and flown before the war ended, and the aircraft was never deployed operationally. Still, the design reflects Japan’s increasingly desperate attempts to sustain its war effort in the face of overwhelming Allied pressure and dwindling supplies.

This 1/72 scale kit from RS Models captures the shape and surface details of the Ki-106 well, with subtle recessed panel lines and accurate proportions. The interior offers the essential elements of a cockpit, but without intricate detailing — typical of short-run kits. The included engine features two visible rows of cylinders, and the clear canopy is molded in one piece. Landing gear and wheels are nicely formed, though the kit does not provide interior painting guidance or photo-etched enhancements.

Despite its simplicity, this kit provides a rare chance to model a lesser-known Japanese prototype. With care and some extra detailing, it can make an excellent and historically interesting addition to any WWII aircraft lineup.
