In its reconnaissance role, the de Havilland Mosquito proved to be one of the most effective and valuable aircraft of World War II. The Mosquito’s wooden construction, low radar signature, high speed, and long range made it ideal for photo-reconnaissance missions, where stealth and the ability to avoid interception were critical. Stripped of armament to save weight and fitted with additional fuel tanks and cameras, reconnaissance Mosquitos could fly higher and faster than most enemy fighters, often completing missions deep into enemy territory without the need for escort.

The principal reconnaissance versions were the PR (Photo Reconnaissance) series, starting with the PR Mk.I and evolving into more advanced variants like the PR Mk.IX and PR Mk.XVI. These aircraft were equipped with state-of-the-art cameras, often mounted in the bomb bay or in oblique positions to capture wide-area and vertical images. Their missions included mapping enemy positions, photographing industrial targets, and providing vital intelligence for the planning of bombing raids. The Mosquito’s speed — exceeding 400 mph — and ceiling of over 35,000 feet made it extremely difficult for German fighters or flak to catch. Even the introduction of the Me 262 jet fighter did little to diminish its effectiveness, as reconnaissance Mosquitos often flew at altitudes and speeds that left only a narrow interception window.

The PR Mosquitoes also carried out long-range missions over the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, gathering intelligence on naval movements and coastal defenses. Their success helped refine Allied bombing strategies and provided vital pre-invasion data, most famously for operations such as the Normandy landings.

This is a new tooled kit in 2025, released together with Special Hobby – SH72508 – DH.98 Mosquito NF Mk.XXX “Night Predator”. Straight kit without PE, resin or 3D printed parts, just plastic parts with and excellent work on clear parts.

Decal sheet offers six markings with options for RAF, RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force), SAAF (South African Air Force) or U.S. markings.
