The KrAZ-257B was a rugged Soviet 6×4 heavy-duty truck developed primarily for military and industrial use during the Cold War era. Built by the Kremenchuk Automobile Plant (KrAZ) in Ukraine, it was an evolution of earlier YaAZ designs and became a common sight across the USSR and other Warsaw Pact nations from the late 1960s through the 1980s.

This truck was designed for durability and reliability in harsh conditions, including unpaved roads, extreme cold, and remote areas with little infrastructure. It featured a powerful V8 diesel engine, usually the YaMZ-238, which delivered strong torque for hauling heavy loads over long distances. The 6×4 layout provided good traction and load distribution, making it suitable for a wide variety of tasks, from general cargo transport to towing artillery or carrying engineering equipment. Its payload capacity typically ranged around 7–8 tons.

The KrAZ-257B had a distinctively utilitarian look with a tall, boxy cab and long flatbed, often with wooden or metal sideboards. Its simple, robust mechanical systems made it relatively easy to maintain and repair in the field—a crucial trait for military logistics and remote construction operations. Though it was not designed with comfort in mind, the truck’s endurance and reliability earned it a reputation as a workhorse of Soviet industry and defense.

While later KrAZ models eventually replaced it, the 257B remained in service for many years and is still remembered as a symbol of heavy-duty Soviet engineering.

The kit includes a good selection of markings and paint schemes with both military and civilian use, including Ukrainian, Soviet, Uzbekistan, Cambodia, German or Moldovan options. Note that despite the box cover, the kit doesn’t include any payload for the cargo.
