Yes, schwere Panzer-Abteilung 502 (s.Pz.Abt. 502) was one of the first German heavy tank battalions equipped with the Tiger I, and it holds the distinction of being the first unit to deploy the Tiger tank in combat. In September 1942, the battalion was operating on the Eastern Front, specifically in the Leningrad sector, during the German efforts to break through Soviet defenses and support Army Group North’s siege of the city.

At that time, the unit had just begun receiving the new Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger tanks, and training and acclimatization to the vehicle were still in progress. The initial deployment was rushed—only a small number of Tigers were available (four in the very first action), and logistical support was limited. The terrain near Leningrad, with its swamps, forests, and soft ground, was particularly unsuited for the heavy, mechanically delicate tanks, leading to multiple breakdowns and limited tactical success.

The first combat use of the Tiger I took place on September 23, 1942, near Mga, southeast of Leningrad. The results were disappointing: the Tigers were committed in small numbers and without adequate infantry or engineering support, and several bogged down or broke down mechanically. While their armor protected them well from Soviet anti-tank weapons, the early operations showed that tactical deployment, terrain suitability, and maintenance were all critical for success—lessons the Wehrmacht would gradually absorb.

Despite the early setbacks, s.Pz.Abt. 502 would go on to become one of the most successful heavy tank units of the war, producing notable tank aces such as Otto Carius. But in September 1942, its legacy was just beginning—marked by mechanical issues, cautious trial-and-error tactics, and the first real battlefield tests of Germany’s most famous heavy tank.
