The M113A1 was an improved version of the original M113 armored personnel carrier, introduced in the early 1960s. Its most notable upgrade was the replacement of the gasoline engine with a more efficient and safer Detroit Diesel 6V-53 engine. This change reduced the risk of fire and extended its operational range, making it a more reliable vehicle for battlefield conditions. The M113A1 retained its lightweight aluminum armor, which provided protection against small arms fire but left it vulnerable to heavier weapons. Despite this, its versatility and mobility made it one of the most widely used armored vehicles in the world.

One of the more interesting modifications involved mounting the M40 106mm recoilless rifle on the vehicle. This powerful anti-tank weapon turned the M113A1 into a mobile fire support platform, capable of engaging enemy armor and fortified positions.

Variant of kit S-Model – PS720070 – Modern US M113A1 APC fitted with an external mounted M40 Recoilless Rifle, a variant seen in several countries such Canadian M113A1s where it was designated M113A1 RCL. Norway or Chile also issued similar modifications to their M113A1s.
