Description:

The TOW missile (Tube-launched, Optically tracked, Wire-guided) is one of the most widely used anti-tank guided missile systems in the world. Developed by the United States in the 1960s and first deployed in the early 1970s, the TOW has seen service in numerous conflicts and remains in use today thanks to continuous upgrades. It’s designed to destroy heavily armored targets such as tanks, fortifications, and light vehicles at long range, and its versatility has made it a mainstay in many NATO and allied arsenals.

The missile is launched from a sealed launch tube and guided to its target by an operator using a day/night sight system, while commands are transmitted through thin wires that unspool from the missile during flight. Although newer versions of the TOW now use wireless guidance, the original wire-guided system is still in widespread service. The missile is relatively slow compared to more modern systems (its speed is roughly 300 m/s), but its powerful tandem warhead (in newer versions) makes it highly effective against reactive and composite armor.

Tripod-Mounted Infantry Version

The tripod-mounted version of the TOW missile system is designed for use by infantry or dismounted units and is usually operated by a two- or three-person team. The system consists of:

• A foldable tripod for stability and low profile.
• A missile launch tube, which is loaded manually.
• A launching and guidance system, which includes a sight unit for the gunner.
• A battery or power unit, and often a control grip or interface.
• An optional thermal imaging sight (ITAS) for night or all-weather capability.

This configuration is portable in sections and can be carried short distances by the crew or mounted on light vehicles such as Humvees. In field conditions, the system is deployed by setting up the tripod, attaching the sight and power unit, and loading a missile. Once fired, the operator must continue to track the target visually through the sight until the missile impacts—this is what’s known as manual command to line of sight (MCLOS) or semi-automatic (SACLOS) guidance, depending on the version.

The tripod TOW system has been used extensively by U.S. forces and allies in a variety of environments. Its ability to engage targets at up to 3,750 meters (and over 4,000 meters in later versions like the TOW 2B Aero) makes it highly effective in both defensive and ambush roles. However, it does require the operator to remain exposed during missile flight, which can take several seconds—an inherent vulnerability compared to “fire-and-forget” systems like the Javelin.

Despite this, the tripod-mounted TOW remains in service due to its reliability, power, and ability to integrate new optics and missile variants. In irregular warfare or defensive operations, it continues to provide infantry with long-range anti-armor firepower that can decisively shape engagements.
