The Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausf. E was an important evolutionary step in the development of Germany’s Panzer IV series, introduced in late 1940. It featured several improvements over earlier models, including upgraded armor protection, most notably an increase in frontal hull and turret armor to 50 mm—essential for survival against the increasingly powerful anti-tank weapons encountered during the early phases of World War II. It retained the short-barreled 75 mm KwK 37 L/24 gun, optimized for infantry support, making it especially effective in soft-target engagements and urban combat. The Ausf. E also introduced internal and external refinements such as a new driver’s visor and a revised commander’s cupola for better visibility.

Used extensively in the Balkans Campaign, North Africa, and on the Eastern Front, the Ausf. E served as a backbone of early German armored units before more advanced variants took over. While its short gun limited its effectiveness against enemy tanks as the war progressed, it remained a reliable and well-balanced vehicle for its time. For modelers and historians, the Ausf.
