Description:

Unpainted plastic soldiers in 1/72 scale depicting Byzantine Clibanarii heavy cavalry.

Clibanarii has similar origin to Cataphracts, the were originally Sasanian Persian heavy cavalry units, heavily armored and later imported in the late Roman and Byzantine empires.

Box contains 12 mounted figures in 6 poses and 12 horses in six poses too. One of the differences Red Box has chosen to depict these troops versus the Cataphracts (Red Box – 72153 – Byzantine Cataphracts Set 1 and Red Box – 72154 – Byzantine Cataphracts Set 2) is that in this case horses are not fully armored, just the front part, but sets are pretty much organized in the same way. In this Set 1, spears predominate, but two archer poses has been introduced too. All the figures wear tuft in the helmet and the shields are a mix of round and oval type. Figures seems to be valid for a wide range of time, but in particular for 8th to 12th centuries.
