The Northrop XP-61 was the prototype of what would become the P-61 Black Widow, the United States’ first purpose-built night fighter. Developed in response to a 1940 U.S. Army Air Corps requirement for an airborne radar-equipped interceptor, the XP-61 was designed with a twin-boom configuration, giving it a distinctive appearance and excellent stability. It was powered by two Pratt & Whitney R-2800-25 radial engines, providing strong performance for a large fighter. The aircraft was heavily armed, featuring a remote-controlled dorsal turret with four .50 caliber M2 Browning machine guns, along with a ventral-mounted 20mm cannon battery, making it one of the most powerful night fighters of its time.

The first flight of the XP-61 took place on May 26, 1942, and while the aircraft demonstrated impressive capabilities, it underwent several modifications before entering full production. The prototype’s initial radar system, the SCR-520, was improved in later versions, increasing target detection range and accuracy. Early test flights revealed issues with control responsiveness and stability, which were addressed with refinements to the control surfaces and aerodynamics. Despite these challenges, the XP-61 paved the way for the P-61 Black Widow, which entered combat in 1944 and became a highly effective night fighter, successfully intercepting enemy bombers and reconnaissance aircraft in both the European and Pacific theaters during World War II.

Update of kit A&A Models – AAM7233 – Northrop F-15A “Reporter” with new parts and new decal sheet, including two prototype markings dated 1945. Kit consists of around 154 parts, include PE (photo-etched) parts and self adhesive pre-cut paint mask.
