Description:

The Northrop F-15 Reporter was a photo-reconnaissance aircraft developed in the late 1940s as a specialized version of the P-61 Black Widow night fighter. It retained the twin-boom configuration and general airframe of the P-61 but was heavily modified for long-range reconnaissance missions. The most notable changes included removing the radar and armament, replacing the nose with a streamlined, transparent section for high-quality aerial photography, and upgrading to more powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800-73 radial engines, which improved its performance. Only 36 F-15 Reporters were built before the U.S. Air Force phased them out in favor of jet-powered reconnaissance aircraft.

During its service life, the F-15 Reporter was used by NACA (the predecessor to NASA) for various test flights, particularly for high-altitude aerodynamic research and photographic mapping. The aircraft’s ability to fly at high speeds and long ranges made it an excellent platform for aerial surveys and atmospheric studies. NACA used the F-15 to gather data on upper-level wind patterns, turbulence, and the effects of high-altitude flight on aircraft structures. These tests contributed valuable information to the development of next-generation reconnaissance and high-performance aircraft, bridging the gap between World War II-era piston-engine designs and early jet aircraft in the postwar period.

Update of kit A&A Models – AAM7233 – Northrop F-15A “Reporter” with new parts and new decal sheet, including two NACA markings dated 1948. Kit consists of around 180 parts, include PE (photo-etched) parts and self adhesive pre-cut paint mask.
