The MiG-19PM was an advanced variant of the Soviet MiG-19, the first supersonic fighter to enter mass production in the USSR. Introduced in the late 1950s, the “PM” version (also known by the NATO reporting name Farmer-E) was a radar-equipped, missile-armed interceptor designed to enhance the basic MiG-19’s air defense capabilities during the height of the Cold War.

Unlike earlier MiG-19 variants that were armed with cannons, the MiG-19PM removed the guns entirely and was instead fitted with a RP-5 Izumrud radar (a version of the RP-2U) in its nose cone, allowing for all-weather interception. It carried four beam-riding RS-2U (AA-1 Alkali) air-to-air missiles under its wings, marking a shift in Soviet doctrine toward missile-based aerial combat. This move, while technologically ambitious, had drawbacks—the RS-2U required constant radar guidance and had limited effectiveness, and the lack of cannons left the aircraft vulnerable in close-range dogfights.

The airframe itself retained the key features of the MiG-19: twin afterburning engines, sharply swept wings, and strong climb and acceleration characteristics. While it had impressive speed and rate of climb for its era, it was known to be demanding to fly, especially at high speeds or during engine-out scenarios.

The MiG-19PM served with Soviet and Warsaw Pact air forces, though it was soon overshadowed by more advanced interceptors like the MiG-21. Still, it played an important transitional role in the evolution of Soviet jet fighters, bridging the gap between gun-armed dogfighters and radar-guided missile platforms in the early jet age.
