The Fiat CR.42 CN “Falco” was a night fighter variant of Italy’s last frontline biplane, the CR.42, developed by Fiat Aviazione in the late 1930s. Despite the rapid shift toward monoplane fighters during World War II, the CR.42 remained in service due to its exceptional maneuverability and robust construction. The “CN” designation stands for Caccia Notturna (Night Fighter), and this variant was adapted for nocturnal operations by incorporating features such as flame-dampening exhausts to reduce visibility and, in some cases, underwing spotlights to aid in target identification. However, the aircraft lacked onboard radar and often operated without radio equipment, relying heavily on pilot skill and visual detection during night missions.

The CR.42 CN was primarily deployed by the Regia Aeronautica to defend Italian cities and military installations from Allied night bombing raids. One notable engagement occurred on the night of 13–14 August 1940, when Capitano Giorgio Graffer intercepted a British Armstrong Whitworth Whitley bomber over Turin. After his guns jammed, Graffer resorted to ramming the bomber, an act that exemplified the daring tactics employed by CR.42 CN pilots. Despite its obsolescence compared to contemporary monoplanes, the CR.42 CN’s agility allowed it to achieve some success in its night fighter role. As the war progressed and more advanced aircraft became available, the CR.42 CN was gradually phased out of frontline service.
