Unassembled plastic model kit in 1/72 scale of a U.S. Douglas X-3 “Stiletto” experimental aircraft.

The Douglas X-3 “Stiletto” was an experimental aircraft developed in the early 1950s by Douglas Aircraft Company to explore sustained supersonic flight and high-speed aerodynamics. It featured an exceptionally slender fuselage and small, highly swept wings, designed to minimize drag at high speeds. Its distinctive needle-like shape gave it the nickname “Stiletto.”

Despite its ambitious design, the X-3 was underpowered due to the unavailability of its intended Westinghouse J46 turbojets, forcing Douglas to install less powerful Westinghouse J34 engines. As a result, the aircraft struggled to reach supersonic speeds in level flight, achieving a maximum speed of only 1,062 km/h (660 mph)—far below its Mach 2 goal. However, the X-3 provided valuable data on airframe heating, roll instability, and high-speed handling, influencing future aircraft like the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter. Though it never became a practical supersonic platform, its research contributed significantly to the development of high-speed aviation.

Update of the AZ Model Douglas X-3 Stiletto kit updated with new 3D Printed parts. Also include self-adhesive paint mask and decal sheet with three markings. The 3D printed parts include seat and wheels. Kit is a basic kit consisting of around 44 plastic parts, plus the new 3D printed.
