Description:

The Sopwith Swallow was an experimental British monoplane developed near the end of World War I by the Sopwith Aviation Company. Unlike the better-known biplane fighters of the era, such as the Sopwith Camel, the Swallow featured a parasol-wing monoplane design — a significant departure from the standard biplane configuration that dominated military aviation at the time. It was essentially a modified version of the Sopwith Camel, sharing many components, including the fuselage and tail, but with a single high-mounted wing replacing the Camel’s double wings.

First flown in 1918, the Swallow was an attempt to explore the potential benefits of monoplane designs, particularly in terms of speed and maneuverability. However, by the time it was developed, the war was nearing its end, and the aircraft never went into production. While it didn’t influence the course of the war, the Sopwith Swallow is notable as a step in the gradual evolution toward monoplane fighters that would become standard by the time of the Second World War. Its experimental nature also highlights the innovative spirit and rapid technological development of aviation during the First World War.
