Description:

The Chengdu F-7 is a Chinese-built version of the Soviet MiG-21, specifically based on the MiG-21F-13, and represents one of the most widely exported and long-serving fighter jets developed in China. Produced by the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation, the F-7 was China’s answer to the need for a supersonic, lightweight interceptor during the Cold War and became a cornerstone of the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) and many export customers.

Initially reverse-engineered from early MiG-21s received from the USSR before the Sino-Soviet split, the F-7 went through multiple upgrades and local adaptations over the decades. The first true production model, the F-7A, closely resembled the MiG-21F-13, including the same basic delta wing design, nose intake, and armament layout. Later versions—such as the F-7M, F-7PG, and F-7NI—introduced improved avionics, radar systems, Western-style cockpit instrumentation, and more advanced weapons compatibility, including Chinese and Western air-to-air missiles.

Despite its basic airframe being based on a 1950s design, the F-7 remained relevant through continuous modernization. It was used by numerous countries across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, including Pakistan, Egypt, Iran, Nigeria, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, often serving as a primary frontline fighter or interceptor.
