The Aermacchi MB-326 is an Italian military jet trainer and light attack aircraft developed in the 1950s by aircraft designer Ermanno Bazzocchi and manufactured by Aermacchi. It was conceived as a response to the growing need for a modern jet trainer capable of offering both basic and advanced instruction, as well as performing light attack missions. The aircraft features a low-wing monoplane design, tandem seating for student and instructor, and a single Rolls-Royce Viper turbojet engine. Its robust construction, forgiving flight characteristics, and versatility led to widespread export success, with more than 800 units built and used by air forces in countries such as Brazil, South Africa, Australia, and Argentina.

One of the most notable variants of the MB-326 is the MB-326K, a dedicated single-seat ground-attack version developed in the late 1960s. Unlike the standard two-seat configuration of the trainer models, the K variant eliminated the second cockpit to allow for increased internal fuel and avionics tailored to combat missions. It was fitted with six underwing hardpoints for bombs, rockets, and gun pods, enhancing its capability as a light strike aircraft. The MB-326K was particularly embraced by the South African Air Force, where it was produced under license by Atlas Aircraft Corporation as the Impala Mk II. Its ruggedness and adaptability made it effective in counterinsurgency and low-intensity conflict environments, and it remained in service in various roles for decades.
