ACE – 72596 – WC-18 1/2 ton 4×4 Ambulance truck

The Dodge WC-18 was a ½-ton 4×4 ambulance truck developed by Dodge as part of the WC series of light military vehicles during World War II. It was one of the early purpose-built ambulances designed specifically for the U.S. Army and served primarily in the early years of the war. Based on the same chassis as other WC ½-ton trucks, the WC-18 offered four-wheel drive, a short wheelbase of about 116 inches, and was powered by a Dodge T-214 6-cylinder engine, which delivered approximately 92 horsepower. This setup allowed it to reach speeds up to 55 mph and cover a range of about 240 miles on a full tank.

The WC-18 featured a closed cab for the driver and front passenger, and an enclosed rear compartment used for transporting wounded soldiers. The rear body was constructed with wooden sides and typically covered with a canvas top. It was configured to carry four stretcher patients or up to six sitting patients, with basic medical supplies on board and a fold-down bench for flexibility. The design prioritized simplicity, robustness, and easy maintenance in battlefield conditions.

Although it saw use in various combat zones such as North Africa and Europe, the WC-18 was relatively short-lived in production and was soon replaced by more advanced and spacious ¾-ton models like the WC-54. These later ambulances offered more internal room and comfort, making them better suited for longer evacuations and larger casualty numbers. The WC-18 remains a notable early example of specialized military medical transport, and today, surviving models are relatively rare and valued by collectors and restorers of World War II military vehicles.

ACE extends their Dodge WC series (ACE – 72593 – WC-43 (T 215) Telephone installation and maintenance 1/2 ton truck) adding new parts for the body and cab but sharing many details and chassis with previous kit. Decal sheet adds three markings, two for ambulance service and one vehicle serving as public library.
