The Messerschmitt Bf 109A “Anton” was the very first production version of the famous Bf 109 fighter series. Developed in the mid-1930s, the Bf 109A was equipped with a Junkers Jumo 210B or 210D engine, and carried light armament, typically two 7.92 mm MG 17 machine guns mounted above the engine. Early in its career, the Bf 109A helped lay the foundation for what would become one of the most iconic and effective fighter designs of World War II.

The Bf 109A saw its first combat during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), where it was deployed by the Condor Legion, a unit composed of German air and ground forces sent to support Francisco Franco’s Nationalist forces. In Spain, the Bf 109A quickly demonstrated its superiority over many older and slower Republican aircraft like the Soviet-supplied Polikarpov I-15 and I-16. Although early Bf 109A models faced some mechanical issues and were relatively lightly armed, their speed, climb rate, and rugged airframe proved to be decisive advantages. Lessons learned from combat in Spain led to rapid improvements in the Bf 109 series, resulting in more heavily armed and faster variants like the Bf 109B, C, and D.

In short, the Spanish Civil War was a crucial proving ground for the Bf 109, and the “Anton” variant, while somewhat primitive compared to later versions, played a key role in establishing the aircraft’s reputation as a dominant fighter. It marked the beginning of the Bf 109’s long and storied combat history across two decades and many theaters of war.
