S-Model – PS720153 – M151A1C (M40 Recoilless Rifle)

Description:

The M151 ¼-ton 4×4 utility truck, commonly referred to as the M151 MUTT (Military Utility Tactical Truck), was developed in the 1950s as a replacement for the aging M38 and M38A1 Jeeps. Designed to offer improved mobility, versatility, and off-road capability, the M151 became the primary light utility vehicle for the U.S. military and its allies throughout the Cold War era. Unlike its predecessors, the M151 featured an integrated body and frame design and a four-wheel independent suspension, providing a smoother ride and better adaptability to rough terrain. However, its early suspension design also introduced handling challenges, particularly during high-speed cornering, which led to multiple design revisions over its service life.

The M151A1, introduced in 1964, was the second major iteration of the MUTT and included minor modifications to the rear suspension to allow for increased load capacity. While these changes improved the vehicle’s ability to carry heavier loads, the fundamental design of the rear suspension remained the same, meaning the handling issues in sharp turns persisted. Another key upgrade was the addition of turn signals on the front fenders, providing better visibility and safety. One specialized variant of this model was the M151A1C, which was equipped with a 106 mm recoilless rifle mounted on a pedestal, making it a potent anti-armor platform. This version could carry six rounds of ammunition along with essential weapon tools and had enough space for a two-man crew, including the driver. With a cruising range of 442 km (275 miles), the M151A1C offered mobile fire support, making it a valuable asset for infantry and reconnaissance units in various combat scenarios.
